Background
Gram-negative, non-sporing bacilli, it is the etiologic agent of glanders, a disease that is often fatal. Its natural reservoir are horses, but it can be occasionally transmitted to humans either by inhalation or through breaks in the skin. B. mallei is highly infectious as an aerosol and was used as a biological weapon in the American Civil War and in both World Wars.
