BacMap: An Interactive Atlas for Exploring Bacterial Genomes
Using BacMap
A complete listing of the species and strains in the BacMap database is available on the BacMap homepage. Below each species/strain name is a list of the sequenced chromosomes and plasmids that are available. A collection of buttons, which are used to view the various BacMap images and annotations, is provided for each sequence:
  • MAP - Displays the map for the chromosome. The map can be zoomed by clicking the tick marks or by using the navigation buttons. Gene labels, which are drawn when the map is zoomed, are hyperlinked to textual gene annotations.
  • TEXT SEARCH - Displays the text search page for the chromosome. This search compares a supplied query to the contents of several fields in the complete collection gene annotations associated with the chromosome. The query can contain Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT), and grouping parenthesis. Results are returned in the form of a graphical map and textual list. Hyperlinks are provided so that the relevant region of the chromosome map and the text annotations can be retrieved for each hit.
  • BLAST - Displays the BLAST search page for the chromosome. This search compares a supplied sequence to the protein sequences, gene sequences, or genomic sequence corresponding to the chromosome. Several options are available for specifying the search type and search parameters. Results are returned in the form of a graphical map and textual alignments. As with the text search, hyperlinks are provided for navigation to BacMap content related to the BLAST hits.
  • STATS - Displays a page containing several graphs depicting proteome and genome composition.
  • DOWNLOAD - Displays a downloads page for the chromosome. Links are provided for obtaining protein sequences, gene sequences, the complete chromosome sequence, the GenBank record, and the BacMap gene annotations.
